Peter Seman Instruments

Peter’s passion for building exceptional violins has led him to make copies of some of the world’s greatest instruments. Browse some of his most recent below. For inquiries on any of these instruments, please contact us.

Carlo Bergonzi “CramerHeath” 1732 Violin

The Cramer Heath was named after William Cramer, the son of violinist Francois Cramer, as well as Baron Henry Burnley Heath, whose father was Consul General for Italy and a close friend of Paganini.

My favorite feature is the wide scroll with extra long ears.

PRS 5-String Violin

Originally designed for David Ragsdale of the rock band, Kansas, I designed this instrument to have great power, clarity, and balance across all five strings. Due to the fact that it is an acoustic electric, I took some liberties with some of the more classic violin shapes.

Ex Soldat.jpg

“ex Soldat” Guarneri Del Gesu 1742 Violin

The ex Soldat was personally selected by Johannes Brahms for 19th century violinist Marie Soldat, who was considered one of the finest violinists of her time. The original is currently being played by Rachel Barton Pine who loaned it to me to make a bench copy. In addition to using a piece of 100-year-old spruce for the top, I took great care to antique the varnish to match the original. It was recently played by Gallia Kastner when she placed first in the Cooper International Violin Competition. Read more about this instrument here.

 "Gore-Booth" 1710 Stradivari Cello

Betts Stradivari 1704 Violin

This violin was made in 1704 by Antonio Stradivari. It was purchased for a minuscule amount in 1820 by a British violin dealer named Arthur Betts. It currently resides in the Library of Congress, and I had the pleasure of seeing the instrument in-person when I attended the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers meeting in Washington, D.C.

I love the outline and long corners of this violin, as well as the wood selection and varnish.
